One of the needs identified within the Morro do Palácio community was some way of offering a summer camp program for young children during vacations. There was certainly interest form local parents, but programs like this were rare. So, with this in mind I proposed a two-week activity that would encourage these kids from the community, to think outside the box and solve an upcoming issue.
I had told the attendees that in two weeks time, a group of aliens would arrive at the MAC-Niterói Museum, thank the people there for taking care of their spaceship, and fly away with it (the museum, does, after all, look like a flying saucer!). However, there was a problem, nobody knew how to talk to these aliens! So these kids would have to develop strategies to be able to communicate with these space visitors.
Therefore, we had classes with choreographers, body percussionists, storytellers… while these kids worked on costumes of what they thought these aliens could look like. It was an intense time with them and they went through many lessons and learning activities.
When the two weeks ended, they were the aliens! They had to go into the museum, and without using words, communicate with the museum visitors their thank you message!
